As Don’t Count Us Out Yet moves into it’s sixth month of publishing easy-to-understand articles concerning the six areas changing the world, the team has decided to give readers resources of further information for each area.
With that being said, these next two articles will each review three areas and share information and resources that you, our readers, can look at for more in-depth answers to what we discuss.
Here is part one, which will review sustainable planet, genetic engineering and artificial intelligence.
Sustainable Planet
Six month overview from our perspective:
This area did a 180 degrees turn with the passage of the inflation reduction act by congress last month. Before that passage, we would have given this area the most pessimistic outlook of the six, but suddenly it becomes the darling.

We would suggest Bill McKibben’s The Crucial Years on Substack. It is well written and highlights major problems concerning the environment. Perhaps it will make you more active and realize the need of change… quickly.
One book on the subject:
“Electrify” by Saul Griffith is the most interesting book that we’ve found on how to stop global warming. It actually builds the case by encouraging people to electrify everything as quickly as possible. It regards the ways to produce electricity as a secondary problem, and says it could all get done in the next 10-15 years. No doomsday scenario here, just what work needs to be done.
Genetic Engineering
Six month overview from our perspective:
This area is growing exponentially, not linearly, and every time we check, more and more medical trials are exposed in developing ways to benefit from this approach. Feeding the world, bringing extinct animals back to life and tailoring our genes for more than just medical reasons. These factors are all starting to be talked about and addressed to what limits might be needed. In our opinion, this area is going to get more and more developed in the near future.

Check out CRISPR Medicine news. You will be blown away by what’s being done as we speak.
One book on the subject:
“Hacking the Code of Life” by Nessa Carey is short, easy-to-read and eye opening. Carey wrote this for a general public audience, and we loved it.
Artificial Intelligence
Six month overview from our perspective:
It keeps blowing our minds on what is happening, from Chinese naval ships with drones being operated by artificial intelligence and no humans to the creation of visual items by Open Mind DALL-E. The world is starting to see more and more things that AI can do that actually require intelligence, not just make humans faster and less error prone on programs they write. This is another area where change is happening quicker and quicker, and it’s one we cover a lot due to our background in it.

Actually, this is an easy one to follow as we see more and more AI articles in two general publication areas. First, the good old New York Times with Kevin Rose, one of the lead reporters. Second, Fast Company seems to write a lot on the subject. Read these two publications plus ours and you will know most of the cutting-edge stuff announced. Here are pieces from each publication about the DALL-E process making headlines everywhere.
One book on the subject:
Our vote, which has been the same since 2018, is “Life 3.0” by MIT physicist Max Tegmark. He goes deep, but the writing in most cases is simple and easy to understand. Stay with it and especially enjoy the first 23 pages on how AI takes over the world. We think you will be surprised at the manner in which it does.
There are the first three out of six areas in this part one review of the last six months. Stay tuned for part two next week to review the other three areas!
